1) "Router" -- As to router switches 1rout·er Pronunciation: 'rau-t&r Function: noun : one that routs : as a : a routing plane b : a machine with a revolving vertical spindle and cutter for milling out the surface of wood or metal Pronunciation Symbols A D-Link Wi-Fi NAT router, popular for home and small office networks A router is a computer networking device that buffers and forwards data packets across an internetwork toward their destinations, through a process known as routing. Routing occurs at layer 3 (the Network layer e.g. IP) of the OSI seven-layer protocol stack. - 1 Function

| Routers are like intersections whereas switches are like streets A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to buffer and transfer data packets among them. A router is different from a switch. A switch connects devices to form a Local area network (LAN) (which might, in turn, be connected to another network via a router). One easy illustration for the different functions of routers and switches is to think of switches as neighborhood streets, and the router as the intersections with the street signs. Each house on the street has an address within a range on the block. In the same way, a switch connects various devices each with their own IP address(es) on a LAN. However, the switch knows nothing about IP addresses except its own management address. Routers connect networks together the way that on-ramps or major intersections connect streets to both highways and freeways, etc. The street signs at the intersection (routing table) show which way the packets need to flow. So for example, a router at home connects the Internet Service Provider's (ISP) network (usually on an Internet address) together with the LAN in the home (typically using a range of private IP addresses, see network address translation) and a single broadcast domain. The switch connects devices together to form the LAN. Sometimes the switch and the router are combined together in one sing..."
2) "Switches" -- As to router switches 1switch Pronunciation: 'swich Function: noun Etymology: perhaps from Middle Dutch swijch twig 1 : a slender flexible whip, rod, or twig <a riding switch> 2 : an act of switching : as a : a blow with a switch b : a shift from one to another c : a change from the usual <that outfit is a switch> 3 : a tuft of long hairs at the end of the tail of an animal (as a cow) -- see COW illustration 4 : a device made usually of two movable rails and necessary connections and designed to turn a locomotive or train from one track to another 5 : a device for making, breaking, or changing the connections in an electrical circuit 6 : a heavy strand of hair used in addition to a person's own hair for some coiffures Pronunciation Symbols Electrical switches. Top, left to right: circuit breaker, mercury switch, wafer switch, DIP switch, surface mount switch, reed switch. Bottom, left to right: wall switch (U.S. style), miniature toggle switch, in-line switch, push-button switch, rocker switch, microswitch. A switch is a device for changing the course (or flow) of a circuit. The prototypical model is a mechanical device (for example a railroad switch) which can be disconnected from one course and connected to another. The term "switch" typically refers to electrical power or electronic telecommunication circuits. In applications where multiple switching options are required (e.g., a telephone service), mechanical switches have long been replaced by electronic variants which can be intelligently controlled and automated. The switch is referred to as a "gate" when abstracted to mathematical form. In the philosophy of logic, operational arguments are represented as logic gates. The use of electronic gates to function as a system of logical gates is the fundamental basis for the computer—i.e. a computer is a system of electronic switches which function as logical gates. - 1 A simple electrical switch
